Hellier de Carteret was an important historical figure who lived from about 1563 to 1578. He became the very first Seigneur (which is like a lord or ruler) of the island of Sark. He also held the title of Seigneur of Saint Ouen in Jersey.
Hellier de Carteret was the son of Édouard de Carteret, who was the Seigneur of Saint Ouen before him. His family had a long history in the Channel Islands.
How Sark Got Its First Seigneur
Hellier de Carteret had a big idea to help the island of Sark. At the time, Sark was empty and deserted. In 1563, he suggested that people should move there and start living on the island again.
Queen Elizabeth I's Grant
His idea was a success! Because of his efforts, Queen Elizabeth I rewarded him. In 1565, she gave him a special document called a Letters Patent. This document officially made him the ruler, or fief, of Sark. This meant he was now the first Seigneur of the island.
Hellier's Family Life
Hellier de Carteret married his cousin, Margaret de Carteret. She was the daughter of another important person named Helier de Carteret, who was a bailiff. Margaret had been married before.
Together, Hellier and Margaret de Carteret had a son. Their son was named Philippe de Carteret I. He later became the second Seigneur of Sark, following in his father's footsteps.
