Sark is a small island located in the Channel Islands, which are found in the English Channel. It's a special place because it's one of the last remaining places in the world where cars are not allowed! Around 600 people call Sark home. If you want to get around, you'll need to walk, ride a bicycle, or take a ride in a horse and cart. Sark also has its own unique language called "Sercquiais," though only about 15 people still speak it. In 2008, Sark made a big change and became a democracy, which means its people now vote for their leaders.

What is Sark?
Sark is a tiny island, only about 5.45 square kilometers (2.1 square miles) in size. It is part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, which is a Crown dependency of the United Kingdom. This means it's not officially part of the UK, but it's protected by it. Sark is known for its beautiful cliffs, quiet roads, and stunning night skies, as it's a designated "Dark Sky Island" perfect for stargazing.
Getting Around Sark
Since cars are banned, life on Sark is very peaceful. The main ways to travel are by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage. Even the emergency services, like the ambulance, are pulled by tractors! This unique rule helps keep the island's natural beauty and quiet atmosphere.
Sark's History and Government
For a long time, Sark had a very old-fashioned system of government called feudalism. This meant that the island was ruled by a "Seigneur" (a lord), and the land was passed down through families. This system had been in place since 1565.
Becoming a Democracy
In 2008, Sark made a huge change. The island decided to become a democracy, just like many other countries. This meant that for the first time, the people of Sark could vote for their representatives in a parliament called the "Chief Pleas." This was a big step towards modern government for the island.
Who Leads Sark Now?
Even though Sark is a democracy, it still has a Seigneur. The current Seigneur is Christopher Beaumont. The Seigneur has some special roles, but the main decisions for the island are now made by the elected members of the Chief Pleas. The island is also part of the larger Bailiwick of Guernsey, and the ultimate head of state is the British monarch, currently Elizabeth II.
Life on the Island
Life on Sark is different from living in a big city. There are no streetlights, no airports, and only a few shops. Most people know each other, and there's a strong sense of community. The island has a small school, a church, and a few hotels and restaurants for visitors.
The Coupée
One of the most famous natural features on Sark is "La Coupée." This is a very narrow, high ridge that connects the main part of Sark to a smaller part called Little Sark. It's only a few meters wide, with steep drops on both sides, and a concrete road runs along it. It's a thrilling walk or ride!
