The Bailiwick of Guernsey is a special territory that belongs to the British Crown. It is located in the Channel Islands, which are a group of islands off the coast of France. The Bailiwick includes several islands like Guernsey, Alderney, Herm, and Sark. It also includes smaller islands such as Burhou, Jethou, Little Sark, and Brecqhou.

A bailiwick is an area governed by a special official called a bailiff. The Bailiff of Guernsey is a very important person. They lead the parliament, which is called the States of Guernsey. This parliament makes the laws for the whole Bailiwick. However, islands like Sark and Alderney also have their own smaller parliaments. These local parliaments can make some of their own laws too.

Islands and Rocks

Besides the main islands, the Bailiwick of Guernsey also has many smaller rocks and islets.

The Casquets

The Casquets are a group of rocks located about 13 kilometers (8 miles) northwest of Alderney. They are part of an underwater ridge made of sandstone. Not many plants can grow on these rocks.

Burhou and Ortac

Burhou and Ortac are two other small rocky islets that rise above the water. Like the Casquets, they don't have much plant life.

Lihou Island

Lihou is a small island that is part of the Channel Islands. It is located off the west coast of Guernsey. Lihou is a "tidal island," which means you can walk to it at low tide! An old stone path connects Lihou to the L'Eree headland on Guernsey when the tide is out. The States of Guernsey bought Lihou Island in January 1995. It is the most western point in the Channel Islands.
