Heltermaa is a small village located in northwestern Estonia. It is part of Hiiumaa Parish in Hiiu County. This village is very important because it has a busy seaport.
The port in Heltermaa connects the island of Hiiumaa with the mainland. Ferries travel regularly between Heltermaa and Rohuküla harbour. This makes Heltermaa a key gateway for people and goods traveling to and from Hiiumaa.

History of Heltermaa Village
Early Mentions of Heltermaa
The village of Heltermaa has a long history. It was first written about in the year 1620. Back then, its name was spelled Heltermecky. This shows that people have lived and worked in this area for a very long time.
Heltermaa and Suuremõisa Manor
For many years, Heltermaa was part of a larger estate. This estate was known as Suuremõisa Manor. In German, this manor was called Grossenhof. Manors were large country houses with a lot of land around them.
Changes in Village Borders
Before 1977, Heltermaa was not a separate village. It was considered part of another nearby village. That village was called Aruküla. Later, Heltermaa became its own distinct village.
