What Does the Hemilienardia homochroa Look Like?
The shell of the Hemilienardia homochroa snail is quite small. It usually grows to about 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) long. Its widest part, called the diameter, is about 2.5 millimeters (0.1 inches).
Shell Color and Shape
This snail has a solid, oval-shaped shell. Its main color is a deep rose pink. There is also a white band on the shell. This band starts as one wide spiral and then becomes three rows wide.
Shell Features and Texture
The shell has eight whorls, which are the spiral turns of the shell. The first three and a half whorls are at the very top and grow quickly.
The shell has special patterns called sculpture. It has twelve strong, rounded ribs that run vertically. These ribs stop at the base of the shell. They are wider than the spaces between them.
There are also spiral patterns on the shell. There are sixteen spirals on the main body whorl and four on the whorl just before it. These are thick, close-set cords that go over both the ribs and the spaces. They continue onto the base of the shell. On the base, they have large beads that line up with the ribs. The whole surface of the shell also has a very tiny, bumpy texture, like shagreen leather.
The Opening of the Shell
The opening of the shell, called the aperture, is vertical. It is narrowed by a thick edge called a varix. This edge has five strong bumps on it. The central pillar inside the shell, known as the columella, is hollowed out and twisted. The snail also has a deep and narrow notch, called a sinus.
Comparing with Similar Snails
The Hemilienardia homochroa is similar to another snail, Hemilienardia malleti, which lives in the tropical Pacific. However, you can easily tell them apart. The Hemilienardia homochroa has a protoconch (the very first part of the shell formed when the snail was a larva) that is the same color as the rest of its shell. The Hemilienardia malleti, on the other hand, has a bright white protoconch.
Where Does the Hemilienardia homochroa Live?
This marine snail lives in the ocean waters off several countries. You can find it near Taiwan, the Philippines, and Australia. In Australia, it is found off the coasts of Queensland and New South Wales.
