Hemp, also known as Hemptown, is a small place in Fannin County, Georgia. It is an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

The Story of Hemp

The area known as Hemp has an interesting past. A long time ago, in 1879, a post office opened there. It was first called Hemptown. However, it closed just one year later in 1880.

The post office reopened in 1886, but this time it was named Hemp. It stayed open for many years, helping people send and receive mail, until it finally closed its doors in 1956.

How Hemp Got Its Name

The name "Hemp" comes from the Cherokee language. It's an English translation of a Cherokee name that meant "Hemp place." This name was given to honor a special person: a Cherokee leader known as Chief Hemp Carrier.

Today, the Georgia State Route 515 highway passes right through the Hemp area.
