Hendra Setiawan (born August 25, 1984) is a famous badminton player from Indonesia. He has won many big titles, including an Olympic Games gold medal, four World Champion titles, two Asian Games gold medals, and two All England championships. He is one of the greatest badminton players ever!
Hendra was ranked number one in the world in men's doubles with two different partners. First, with Markis Kido in 2007, and then with Mohammad Ahsan in 2013. He has won six gold medals at the SEA Games. With Markis Kido, he won the Asian Championships in 2005 and 2009, the World Cup in 2006, the World Championships in 2007, the 2008 Olympic Games, and the Asian Games in 2010.
Later, Hendra formed a strong partnership with Mohammad Ahsan in 2012. Together, they won many important titles. These include the World Championships in 2013, 2015, and 2019. They also won a gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games, two All England titles, and three BWF Superseries Finals. Hendra Setiawan holds the record as the oldest player to win a World Championships title, at 35 years old.
Early Life
Hendra Setiawan was born in Pemalang, Central Java, Indonesia. He is the youngest of three children. Hendra became interested in badminton by watching his dad play. He started playing at age seven at a local club. After middle school, Hendra moved to Jakarta to train at the Jaya Raya club and study at a special sports school.
Career Highlights
Starting Out (2001–2005)
Hendra began his international career at the Asian Junior Championships in 2001. He won bronze medals in the boys' team and mixed doubles events. In 2002, he won a gold medal with the Indonesian boys' team at the Asian Junior Championships. He also won two more bronze medals in individual events.
In 2003, Hendra teamed up with Markis Kido and won a silver medal at the Asian Championships. He then won his first gold medal with the Indonesian team at the SEA Games. In 2005, Hendra and Kido won their first big title at the Indonesia Open. They also became Asian Champions that year.
World Cup and World Champion (2006–2007)
In 2006, Hendra and Kido won the Hong Kong Open and the China Open. They also won the World Cup title. At the 2006 Asian Games, they earned two bronze medals.
In 2007, Hendra and Kido became World Champions! They beat a strong Korean pair in the final. After this win, they became the world's number one men's doubles team. They also won the Chinese Taipei Open, China Open, and Hong Kong Open. Hendra also helped Indonesia win team gold at the SEA Games.
Olympic Gold (2008)
Hendra and Markis Kido started 2008 by winning the Malaysia Open. In August, they competed at the Beijing Olympics. They reached the finals and won the gold medal on Indonesia's Independence Day! They beat the Chinese pair of Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng in an exciting match.
After the Olympics, they won three more tournaments in a row: the China Masters, Denmark Open, and French Open.
New Partnerships (2009–2012)
In 2009, Hendra and Kido won their second Asian Championships title. Hendra also played mixed doubles with Anastasia Russkikh from Russia. They reached the finals of the Indonesia Open. Hendra and Kido won the gold medal at the 2010 Asian Games. They had a tough final match, saving two match points to win!
In 2011, Hendra faced some challenges and didn't win any titles. He and Kido won a silver medal at the SEA Games. At the end of 2012, Hendra and Kido decided to stop playing together. Hendra then rejoined the national team and started a new partnership with Mohammad Ahsan.
Dominating with Ahsan (2013–2016)
In 2013, Hendra and Mohammad Ahsan quickly became a top team. They won their first title together at the Malaysia Open. They then won five tournaments in a row, including the World Championships in August. They finished the year as world number one and won the BWF Superseries Finals.
In 2014, Hendra and Ahsan won the famous All England Open. This was their first All England title as a pair. They also won their second Asian Games gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games.
In 2015, they won three more titles, including their second World Championships title together (Hendra's third overall). They won the 2015 BWF World Championships in their home country, Indonesia. They also won the Dubai World Superseries Finals.
In 2016, Hendra and Ahsan won the Thailand Masters. They also helped Indonesia win the Asia Team Championships. Hendra played in his second Olympics in Rio, but they were eliminated early. At the end of 2016, the Indonesian badminton association decided to split the pair.
New Partners and Reunion (2017–2019)
In 2017, Hendra teamed up with Tan Boon Heong from Malaysia. They reached one final at the Australian Open. They later split up.
In 2018, Hendra reunited with Mohammad Ahsan. They won the Singapore Open. In 2019, Hendra and Ahsan had an amazing year. They reached 11 finals and became the first men's doubles pair to win three major titles in one year! They won their second All England Open title. Hendra also won his fourth World Championships title on his 35th birthday, making him the oldest World Champion. They ended the year by winning the BWF World Tour Finals.
Recent Years (2020–2023)
In 2020, Hendra and Ahsan reached the finals of the Indonesia Masters and the BWF World Tour Finals. In 2021, Hendra finally won the Thomas Cup with the Indonesian team. This was Indonesia's first Thomas Cup title in 19 years! He also played in his third Olympics in Tokyo.
In 2022, Hendra and Ahsan reached the finals of the India Open, their third All England final, the Malaysia Masters, and their fourth World Championships final. They also reached the final of the BWF World Tour Finals.
In 2023, Hendra and Ahsan continued to compete at a high level. They reached the final of the All England Open for the second year in a row. They also reached the quarter-finals of the Asian Championships and the World Championships.
Personal Life
Hendra Setiawan is the youngest of three children. His older sister, Silvia Anggraeni, is married to another former Indonesian badminton player, Hendrawan.
Hendra married Sandiani Arief in 2011. They have twin children, Richard Heinrich Setiawan and Richelle Hillary Setiawan, born in 2014. In 2017, they welcomed another son, Russell Howard Setiawan.
Hendra also has a personal YouTube channel. He shares vlogs about his life on the World Tour and family videos with his wife and kids. His channel has over 223,000 subscribers.
