She went to a girls' boarding school named Laurel Bank in Melrose.
From 1901 to 1904, she worked at the University of Glasgow. She was in charge of a place where female students lived. Besides this, she spent most of her life writing books. She never got married.

Her Famous History Books
H. E. Marshall is best known for her 1905 children's history book, Our Island Story. A. S. Forrest drew the pictures for the book. In the USA, the book was called An Island Story: A Child's History of England.
This book was a huge success and was printed many times. For about 50 years, it was the main book children used to learn about England's history.
However, some parts of Our Island Story are not completely accurate. For example, the section about King Richard III is mostly based on William Shakespeare's play, not always on historical facts.
The book stopped being printed in the 1960s. But in 2005, a group called Civitas and some newspapers helped print it again. They wanted to send a free copy to every primary school in the UK. Readers of The Daily Telegraph newspaper gave money to help with this.
In 2010, David Cameron, who was the British Prime Minister, said Our Island Story was his favorite book when he was a child.
