Henrietta Butler (born Henrietta FitzJames, 1667 – 1730) was an important noblewoman in English history. She was the daughter of James II of England, who later became King of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Her mother was Arabella Churchill, who was a sister to the famous John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Henrietta held several important titles during her life, including Baroness Waldegrave and Viscountess Galmoye. She was also known as Countess of Newcastle, a title given by her father after he lost his throne.
Early Life and First Marriage
Henrietta FitzJames was born in 1667. She was the older sister of James FitzJames, 1st Duke of Berwick, a well-known military leader. Henrietta was raised as a Roman Catholic, just like her family.
On 29 November 1683, she married Henry Waldegrave, 1st Baron Waldegrave. He was also from a Catholic family. Together, they had two children:
- Arabella Waldegrave
- James Waldegrave, 1st Earl Waldegrave
Life in Exile and Second Marriage
After her father, King James II, lost his throne, Henrietta went with him and his wife into exile. They lived for some years in France, at a place called Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
Henrietta's first husband, Henry Waldegrave, died in 1689. Later, on 3 April 1695, she married Piers Butler, 3rd Viscount Galmoye. He had received the title Earl of Newcastle in 1692. This title was part of the Jacobite Peerage, which means it was given by King James II after he was no longer the ruler. Henrietta and Piers Butler did not have any children together.
Henrietta Butler died in 1730. She was buried in Navestock, England.
