The Story of the Henry Antes House
The house was designed and built by Henry Antes nearly 300 years ago. It is a great example of a German-style home from that time, with a special three-room layout. The house is very rare because many of its original inside features, like the ceilings and wooden walls, are still there.
Who Was Henry Antes?
While not famous today, Henry Antes was a very important person in the 1700s. He was a leader in his community and was known as one of the best builders in the area. He helped build many important buildings for the Moravian Church, a Protestant religious group.
A Stop for George Washington
During the American Revolutionary War, the house played a small but important role. General George Washington used the house as his headquarters from September 23 to 26, 1777. This was during the Philadelphia Campaign, a series of battles where the British army was trying to capture Philadelphia.
Henry's son, Colonel Philip Frederick Antes, was also involved in the war. He was an officer in the local militia, helping to fight for American independence.
What Does the House Look Like?
The Henry Antes House is in a country setting near Swamp Creek. It is a two-story building made from local stone, with a sloped, shingled roof.
The front of the house has two main sections, with the front door on the left. The windows and doors on the first floor have curved stone arches above them. There are also small windows with arched tops at the very top of the house on the shorter sides.
Visiting the House Today
The Henry Antes House is now owned by the Goschenhoppen Historians. This local group carefully restored the house to show what it was like in the 1700s. They now operate it as a museum and offer tours for people who want to see inside and learn more about its history.
