He quickly became very good at his job. He helped survey, or map, the Persian Gulf. This is a large sea area between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. Henry also had a special talent for languages. He learned Arabic, Hindustani, and Persian. These skills were very useful for his work.
Rising Through the Ranks
By 1829, when he was 22, Henry was promoted to lieutenant. He became the official interpreter for the Gulf squadron. This group of ships mapped the Gulf and the Arabian coast. He also worked for the Commodore, who was a high-ranking naval officer.
Henry traveled a lot in Arabia. He became skilled at talking with Arab tribes and their leaders, called 'shaykhs'. This helped him become a director of communications.
The Euphrates Expedition
In 1834, Henry became second-in-command to Francis Rawdon Chesney. They were part of an important expedition. Their goal was to explore the Euphrates River. This river flows through modern-day Turkey, Syria, and Iraq.
Henry was in charge of talking with different Arab tribal leaders. He also commanded a ship named the Tigris. Sadly, the Tigris sank. Henry escaped, but his brother, Robert Blosse, was lost. Henry then returned home in 1836.

By 1839, Henry had finished mapping the Tigris River. More ships were sent to join the expedition. Three dismantled steamers were brought around Africa. They were put back together in Baghdad. Now, four steamers were sailing under Henry's command.
In 1841, he mapped the land of Mesopotamia. This is the area between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. At the same time, he and his brother, Thomas Kerr Lynch, started a postal service. It ran between Baghdad and Damascus.
Henry went back to India in 1842. He was an active member of the Bombay Geographical Society. He also helped start the Indian Navy Club. In 1855, he returned home to Ireland. He retired from the navy a year later. Henry made many important maps and studies of the places he explored.
