Henry Bracken received his first education in Lancaster. He studied with Mr. Bordley and Reverend Thomas Holmes. Later, he became an apprentice to Dr. Thomas Worthington. Dr. Worthington was a very busy doctor in Wigan. An apprentice learns a trade or skill by working with an experienced person.
Around 1717, after his apprenticeship, Henry went to London. He spent a few months learning at St Thomas' Hospital. Then, he traveled to Paris to study at the Hôtel-Dieu. This was a famous hospital.

Henry Bracken continued his studies in Leyden, a city in the Netherlands. There, he learned from a very famous doctor named Herman Boerhaave. Henry earned his M.D. degree, which means Doctor of Medicine.
After finishing his studies, he returned to London. He learned more by observing the work of Drs. Wadsworth and Plumtree. Soon, he started his own medical practice in Lancaster. He quickly became well-known as a talented surgeon and author.
