Henry Cary, Jr. was born in Colonial Virginia. This was in the late 1600s. His father, Henry Cary, Sr., was also a builder. It is thought that Henry Jr. learned his skills from his father. Henry Cary, Jr. was married three times. He had seven children.
Building Important Places
Henry Cary, Jr. started working more after his father retired in 1710. In 1720, he was asked to work on the Governor's Palace. This important building is in Williamsburg. His father had started the project but could not finish it.
Cary worked on many projects in Williamsburg. In 1726, he built new gates for the Capitol building. He also helped build several parts of the College of William & Mary. This included a chapel wing in 1729. He also built the President's House in 1732. It is also likely he built the Brafferton building in 1723.
Around 1733, Henry Cary, Jr. moved to the James River. There, he built a home called Ampthill. This house is in Chesterfield County, Virginia. It was the Cary family home for many years.
