Henry Cavendish, 3rd Baron Waterpark facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Henry Manners Cavendish, 3rd Baron Waterpark (born November 8, 1793 – died March 31, 1863), was an important British nobleman and a politician from the Whig party. He played a part in British government during the 1800s.

Early Life and Family

Henry Manners Cavendish was the son of Richard Cavendish, 2nd Baron Waterpark, and his mother, Juliana Cooper. When his father passed away in 1830, Henry became the 3rd Baron Waterpark.

A "Baron" is a title of nobility, like a lord. However, because his title was an Irish peerage, it didn't automatically give him a seat in the House of Lords in the British Parliament. The House of Lords is one of the two main parts of the UK Parliament, usually for nobles and bishops.

His Time in Politics

Even without a seat in the House of Lords, Henry Waterpark became a politician. In 1830, he was chosen to represent Knaresborough in the House of Commons. The House of Commons is the other main part of the UK Parliament, where elected representatives make laws. He held this seat until 1832.

After that, he represented Derbyshire South from 1832 to 1835. Later, in 1854, he was elected again to the House of Commons for Lichfield, serving until 1856.

Lord Waterpark also held important roles in the royal household:

  • He was a Lord-in-waiting from 1846 to 1852, and again from 1853 to 1858. A Lord-in-waiting is a noble who attends to the monarch.
  • He was a Lord of the Bedchamber to Albert, Prince Consort (Queen Victoria's husband) from 1859 to 1861. This was another role assisting the royal family.

Military Service

Besides his political career, Lord Waterpark was also involved in the military. He was a Colonel in the Derbyshire Militia. A militia was a group of citizens trained as soldiers, ready to defend their area. He also served as a lieutenant-colonel for the King's Own Staffordshire Militia until he stepped down in June 1832.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1837, Lord Waterpark married Eliza Jane, who was the daughter of Thomas Anson, 1st Viscount Anson.

He passed away in March 1863, at the age of 69. His son, also named Henry, took over the title as the 4th Baron Waterpark. Lady Waterpark, his wife, lived until September 1894. She was a member of the Royal Order of Victoria and Albert, which was an honour given by the Queen.
