Henry Dison Gabell (1764–1831) was an important headmaster of Winchester College, a famous school in England. He was known for his work in education during the late 1700s and early 1800s.
Gabell was born in Winchester in 1764. His father, Timothy Gabell, was also a clergyman. Henry Gabell became a student at Winchester College in 1779. Later, he went to New College, Oxford, where he studied and earned his first degree in 1786. He also held a fellowship there, which meant he was a member of the college's teaching staff.
Early Career
After his time at Oxford, Gabell became the headmaster of Warminster School. This was a smaller school where he taught about twenty boys. He also took on private students to teach.
In 1788, he became a rector, which is a type of church leader, at St. Lawrence in Winchester. He continued his work in education and was appointed as the second master at Winchester College in 1793.
Headmaster of Winchester College
Henry Gabell earned another degree from Cambridge University in 1807. In 1810, he became the headmaster of Winchester College. This was a very important role. During his time as headmaster, he also became a rector in two other places: Ashow, Warwickshire, in 1812, and Binfield, Berkshire, in 1820.
He led Winchester College until December 1823. When he left, the students gave him a special gift of engraved silver plates to thank him for his work. He continued to serve as a rector in Binfield, Ashow, and St. Lawrence until he passed away.
Personal Life and Writings
Henry Gabell married Miss Gage on January 11, 1790. Her father was also a clergyman from Holton, Oxfordshire. One of their daughters, Maria, married William Scott in 1818.
Gabell was a friend of a well-known scholar named Dr. Parr. They wrote letters to each other about classical studies. Some of these letters can be found in Dr. Parr's published works.
Gabell also wrote and published a few things himself:
- A pamphlet in 1796 about changing rules to lower the price of corn (grain).
- A speech he gave in 1799 on a special fast-day.
Henry Gabell died in Binfield on April 18, 1831.
