Henry Martin Doyle was born in 1859. His birthplace was Ballan, a town near Ballarat in Victoria, Australia. His father, James Doyle, was an early settler in the area.

Henry went to school at St Patrick's College. After that, he studied at Mount Melleray Abbey. He then decided to pursue a career in medicine. He traveled to Europe to study. He learned medicine in Paris, France, and at the London Hospital in England.

Becoming a Doctor

While in England, Henry Doyle achieved important medical qualifications. He became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. This meant he was qualified to perform operations. He also joined the Royal College of Physicians. This allowed him to practice general medicine. He was also part of the Society of Apothecaries.

Medical Career and Public Service

In 1889, Dr. Doyle began working as a medical officer at sea. He traveled on ships, caring for the health of the crew and passengers.

Later, in 1891, he settled in Newcastle, Australia. He became the medical superintendent at the Royal Newcastle Hospital. This was a very important role. He was in charge of the hospital's medical services.

A Career in Politics

Henry Doyle also had an interest in politics. He was a supporter of Irish nationalism. This was a movement that wanted Ireland to have more control over its own government.

In 1912, he was chosen to join the New South Wales Legislative Council. This is a part of the New South Wales Parliament. He was appointed by the Labor government.

However, Dr. Doyle did not always agree with the Labor Party. He often voted differently from them. He moved further away from the party after a big disagreement in 1916. This disagreement was about whether Australia should force people to join the army during World War I.

Later Life

Henry Martin Doyle passed away in 1929. He died in Darlinghurst, a suburb of Sydney. He left behind a legacy as both a dedicated doctor and a politician.
