Who Was Henry David Erskine?
Henry David Erskine was born in 1710. He was the oldest son of David Erskine, 9th Earl of Buchan. His mother was Frances Fairfax. Before he became the Earl of Buchan in 1745, he was known as Lord Auchterhouse.
His Important Roles
In 1734, Henry David Erskine became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group for people interested in science. Being a Fellow means he was recognized for his knowledge and contributions.
He was also a freemason. Freemasonry is a social and charitable organization. From 1745 to 1746, he held a very important position. He was the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. This means he was the leader of the Freemasons in Scotland during that time.
His Family Life
Lord Buchan married Agnes Steuart on January 31, 1739. Agnes was the daughter of Sir James Steuart. Together, they had six children.
Their oldest daughter was Lady Anne Agnes Erskine. She became involved with a religious group called the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion. This happened partly because she cared for her father when he was ill.

Lord Buchan passed away in December 1767. He was 57 years old. His funeral was led by a famous preacher named George Whitefield. After his death, his son David became the 11th Earl of Buchan.
His wife, the Countess of Buchan, died later in December 1778. She was 61 years old when she passed away in Edinburgh, Scotland.
