Henry Greville, 3rd Earl of Warwick facts for kids
Henry Richard Greville (born March 29, 1779, died August 10, 1853) was an important British politician. He was known as the 3rd Earl of Warwick and the 3rd Earl Brooke. Before he became an Earl, people called him Lord Brooke.
He was a member of the Tory Party, which was a major political group in Britain at the time. He held many important jobs in the government.
His Life and Travels
Henry Greville was the son of George Greville, who was the 2nd Earl of Warwick. He went to school at Winchester College.
When he was a young man, Henry went on a long trip called a "Grand Tour." This was a common trip for young, wealthy people in Europe. From June 1801 to August 1803, he traveled to many countries. He visited places like Copenhagen, Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Switzerland, and all over Italy.
In March 1803, he joined Sir William Drummond and George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen on a ship. This ship, called HMS Medusa, was taking Drummond to Constantinople.
Henry took another trip to Italy later, in the late 1820s. During this trip, he bought some special tables made of stone from a palace in Venice. These tables were later sold in 2015.
His Political Career
Henry Greville started his political career in 1802. He was elected to represent the town of Warwick in the British Parliament. He kept this job until 1816. That year, his father passed away, and Henry became the Earl of Warwick.
As an Earl, he moved to the House of Lords, which is another part of the Parliament. From 1841 to 1846, he worked as a Lord-in-waiting. This was a role where he helped manage government business in the House of Lords. He served in the government led by Sir Robert Peel.
Henry also held several other important positions:
- He was a Recorder for Warwick from 1816 to 1813. A Recorder is like a judge who helps with legal matters.
- He was the Lord-Lieutenant of Warwickshire from 1822 to 1853. This role meant he was the King's or Queen's representative in the county.
- He was a Lord of the Bedchamber from 1828 to 1830. This was a personal attendant to the King.
In 1827, he was given a special honor. He became a Knight of the Thistle, which is a very old and respected award in Scotland.
An Artist Too!
Besides his political work, Henry Greville was also an amateur artist. This means he enjoyed art as a hobby. One of his prints, called Landscape with Old Trees by Water, was published in 1803. This print was one of the very first lithographs ever made in Britain. Lithography is a special way of making prints using a stone or metal plate.
Family Life
Lord Warwick married Lady Sarah Elizabeth in 1816. Sarah was the daughter of the 2nd Earl of Mexborough. She had also been married before.
Lady Sarah passed away in January 1851 when she was 64 years old. Henry Greville lived for two more years after her. He died in August 1853, at the age of 74. His son, George, became the next Earl of Warwick.
