Henry John George Herbert, the 3rd Earl of Carnarvon (born June 8, 1800 – died December 10, 1849), was an important British figure. Before he became an Earl, people knew him as Lord Porchester. He was a writer, a traveler, a nobleman, and a politician. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society, a special group for top scientists.

Early Life and Education
Henry Herbert was born in London. He was the oldest son of Henry Herbert, the 2nd Earl of Carnarvon. His mother was Elizabeth "Kitty" Acland.
He went to two famous schools: Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford University. He also wrote a play called Don Pedro, King of Castile. This play was a tragedy, a type of serious drama. It was performed in London in 1828.
Public Life and Politics
In 1831, Henry Herbert became a member of the House of Commons. This is one part of the British Parliament, where elected officials make laws. He represented the area of Wootton Bassett. He belonged to the Tory political party, which was a conservative group at the time.
He held his seat until 1832. That year, the Great Reform Act changed how voting worked and removed his constituency. In 1833, when his father passed away, Henry became the 3rd Earl of Carnarvon. This meant he moved to the House of Lords, the other part of Parliament, which is made up of noble people.
In 1841, he was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group for people who have done great things in science. During his time, the family's main home, Highclere Castle, was rebuilt. It was designed by a famous architect named Sir Charles Barry. It became the large Victorian mansion we know today.

Family Life
In 1830, Lord Carnarvon married Henrietta Anna Howard-Molyneux-Howard. They had three sons and two daughters:
- Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon (1831–1890) became a very important politician in the Conservative Party.
- Lady Eveline Alicia Juliana Howard Herbert (1834–1906).
- The Hon. Alan Percy Harty Molyneux Howard Herbert (1836–1907) was a doctor. He received a special award from the French government, the Legion of Honour. He earned it for helping people as a doctor during a war in Paris.
- Hon. Auberon Edward William Molyneux Howard Herbert (1838–1906) was a writer and thinker. He also served as a Member of Parliament for Nottingham.
- Lady Gwendolen Ondine Herbert (1842–1915) never married.
Later Years and Death
Henry Herbert, the 3rd Earl of Carnarvon, passed away in December 1849. He was 49 years old. His oldest son, Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon, became the next Earl.
