Sir Henry Lawrence (full name Henry Montgomery Lawrence) was an important British officer and administrator in British India. He was born on June 28, 1806, and died on July 4, 1857. Henry Lawrence became the first Chief Commissioner of the Punjab region after the British took control of it. This happened after a conflict known as the Second Anglo-Sikh War.

He sadly died while protecting the city of Lucknow during a major uprising in India. This event is known as the Indian Mutiny or the First Indian War of Independence. His younger brother, Sir John Lawrence, later took over his role in the Punjab and became its first Lieutenant-Governor.

Who Was Henry Lawrence?
