The Henry Magill House is a special old house located in Windsor, Connecticut. It was built way back in 1861. This house is a great example of a building style called Second Empire architecture. It's quite rare to find a house like this in Windsor that is made of brick and still looks so good! Because it's so important, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This list helps protect important historical places across the United States.
What Does the Henry Magill House Look Like?
The Henry Magill House is north of downtown Windsor. You can find it on the east side of Palisado Avenue, which is also known as Connecticut Route 159. It's close to where Palisado Avenue meets Kennedy Road.
Building Design and Features
This house is 1-1/2 stories tall and built with strong bricks. It has a special kind of roof called a mansard roof. This roof shape allows for a full second floor inside the attic space.
The front of the house, which faces the street, has three sections. The middle section is set back a little.
- Each section on the attic level has a small window sticking out of the roof. These windows have narrow columns on the sides and a fancy, triangular top.
- On the ground floor, the outer sections have windows with stone sills and tops.
- The main front door is in the middle section. It has a small porch with square posts and a low, flat roof.
The house also has a stone base that separates the brick basement from the main floor. The roof has decorative brackets underneath its edge. On the side of the house that faces south, there are two cool, rounded window sections. Each of these has its own fancy top and a small, pointed roof.
History of the Henry Magill House
The Henry Magill House was built in 1861 for a farmer named Henry Magill. It's a very detailed and fancy example of the Second Empire style. This style isn't very common in Windsor, which makes the house even more special. Many of its original parts and designs are still there today, looking much like they did when the house was first built.
