Becoming a Boxer
Henry Maske was born in a town called Treuenbrietzen in what was then East Germany. He started boxing as an amateur, which means he competed for fun and experience, not for money.
Olympic Gold Medal
One of his biggest achievements was winning a Gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. He competed in the middleweight category. To win the gold, he defeated several opponents, including Helman Palije, Sello Mojela, Michele Mastrodonato, Chris Sande, and Egerton Marcus in the final.
Other Amateur Wins
Maske also won the 1989 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Moscow. He earned a silver medal at the 1986 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Reno, Nevada. He was very successful in the European Amateur Championships too, winning multiple gold medals in 1985, 1987, and 1989.
He faced tough opponents during his amateur career. One of them was Angel Espinosa from Cuba. Maske lost to him three times. Luckily for Maske, Cuba did not participate in the 1988 Olympics, so he didn't have to face Espinosa there.
Professional Boxing Career
After Germany became one country again in 1990, Henry Maske decided to become a professional boxer. This meant he would now box for money. He quickly became a world champion.
Winning the World Title
On March 20, 1993, Henry Maske won the IBF world title in the light heavyweight division. He was a champion for many years. He successfully defended his title ten times between 1993 and 1996. This means he won against ten different challengers who tried to take his title.
Retirement and Comeback
Maske retired from boxing in 1996 after he lost a close fight to Virgil Hill. However, he made a surprising comeback 11 years later. In 2007, he fought Virgil Hill again in Munich. This time, Maske won the fight, getting revenge for his only professional loss. After this win, he retired from boxing for good.
Life After Boxing

Since retiring from boxing, Henry Maske has been busy with other things. He owns ten McDonald's restaurants in Germany. He also works as a boxing commentator for a German television channel, sharing his knowledge of the sport.
Acting Role
In 2010, Henry Maske played the main character in a movie called Max Schmeling. This movie was about another famous German boxer. Maske took acting lessons for several months to prepare for the role.
