The Henry N. Barkhausen Cache River Wetlands Center is a cool place to learn about nature! About the Center's History

Who Was Henry N. Barkhausen?

The center is named after a very important person named Henry N. Barkhausen. He was a big supporter of protecting the natural beauty of the Cache River. He encouraged different government groups, private organizations, and local people to work together to keep the Cache River special.

Mr. Barkhausen used to be in charge of the Illinois Department of Conservation, which is now called the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. He helped start the state's first natural area program. He was also a trustee for The Nature Conservancy in Illinois and spent 19 years helping the Citizens Committee to Save the Cache River. This group worked hard to protect the Cache River.

When Did the Center Open?

Building the center began in the year 2000 and cost about $4 million. By November 2004, the building was finished. In 2004, the center started hosting programs for schools and the community.

The exhibits were fully ready in 2005, and the center opened to the public a couple of days a week. Later that same year, in November, the center expanded its hours. Now, you can visit from Wednesday through Sunday, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
