Cypress is a small village in Johnson County, Illinois, United States. In 2020, about 217 people lived there.

History of Cypress

Cypress started in the late 1890s. It was a stop for the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad, a big train company. A post office from nearby Gray's Mill moved to Cypress. It was set up in an old bank building.

The village is probably named after the many cypress trees. These trees grow a lot near the Cache River. Cypress Grade School was built in 1917. A tornado damaged the school on April 28, 2002. About four years later, a new school was finished.

Getting Around Cypress

Cypress does not have airports or bus systems. Many people enjoy riding bicycles in the village. Old train tracks from the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad are still there. However, trains stopped using them in 1984.

Cypress Geography

Cypress is located in the southwestern part of Johnson County. You can find it at 37°21′56″N 89°1′3″W / 37.36556°N 89.01750°W / 37.36556; -89.01750. The village is in the Cache River area. It is northwest of Karnak and southwest of Vienna. The Heron Pond – Little Black Slough Nature Preserve is just east of Cypress.

In 2010, Cypress covered about 0.75 square miles (1.95 square kilometers). Almost all of this area is land. Only a very small part is water.
