Henry George Purver (born May 3, 1891 – died July 31, 1916) was an English footballer. He played as a centre forward for clubs like Oxford City and Brentford. He was also a reporter for The Times newspaper. Sadly, he lost his life during the First World War.
Henry Purver's Life Story
In 1911, Henry Purver worked as a newspaper reader. Later, he became a reporter for The Times newspaper. This was a big newspaper in London.
When the First World War began, Henry decided to join the army. In July 1915, he signed up in Hounslow. He became a private in the Royal Fusiliers. This was a famous army regiment. He joined the 24th Battalion, which was also known as the Sportsmen's Battalion.
Soon after joining, Henry was hurt by gas during a battle. He needed a long time to get better. This time is called convalescence. While he was recovering, he married Margaret Clifford in October 1915.
In April 1916, Henry went back to the front lines. This was where the main fighting happened in France. On July 31, 1916, he was reported missing in action at Delville Wood. This means no one knew what happened to him. It was thought that he had been killed.
Henry's body was never found. His name is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial in France. This memorial honors soldiers who died in the war and have no known grave.
