Henry Scardeville (1654–1703) was an important Anglican priest in Ireland during the late 1600s and early 1700s. He held several significant roles within the church.

Early Life and Education

Henry Scardeville was born in Salisbury, England, in 1654. He went to school at Repton before moving to Ireland for his higher education. He studied at Trinity College, Dublin, which is a very well-known university.

A Career in the Church

After his studies, Henry Scardeville became a chaplain to Duke Schomberg, a famous general. This was an important role, as chaplains provided spiritual guidance.

In 1681, he was appointed as the rector of Cloghran. A rector is a priest in charge of a parish. The next year, in 1682, he also became a prebend of Swords, Co. Dublin. A prebend is a type of church official who receives income from a cathedral.

Work in Swords

As the Vicar of Swords, Henry Scardeville was responsible for an interesting project in 1702. He oversaw the addition of a cross to the very top of the historic Round Tower in Swords. This tower is a famous landmark.

He continued to rise in the church. He became the Archdeacon of Ross and later the Dean of Cloyne. Both archdeacons and deans are senior leaders within the church, overseeing many parishes and priests. He held these important positions until his death.

Family Life

Henry Scardeville was married twice. His first wife was Mary Molesworth. Sadly, she and their child passed away during childbirth.

Later, he married Margaret Culliford, who was from Derbyshire, England. Together, they had a son named Frederick Maynhard and a daughter named Elizabeth.

Death and Legacy

Dr. Henry Scardeville died on February 3rd, 1703. He was buried in the Chancel of Swords Church.

Many years later, in 1811, his tombstone and a special wall monument were moved. They were placed in the new St. Columba's Church in Swords, where they can still be seen today.
