Henry Scott, 1st Earl of Deloraine (born 1676 – died 25 December 1730) was an important Scottish military leader and a nobleman. He held the rank of a Major-General in the British army. He was also a peer (a member of the nobility) and was honored with the Order of the Bath.

Early Life and Family

Henry Scott was born in 1676. His father was James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, who was a son of King Charles II. His mother was Anne Scott, 1st Duchess of Buccleuch. She was the daughter of Francis Scott, 2nd Earl of Buccleuch.

In 1693, Henry Scott married Anne Duncombe. She was the daughter of William Duncombe. They had three children who lived to adulthood:

  • Francis Scott, who later became the 2nd Earl of Deloraine (1710–1739)
  • Henry Scott, who became the 3rd Earl of Deloraine (1712–1740)
  • Lady Anne Scott (born around 1720), who never married.

Becoming an Earl and Public Service

In 1706, Queen Anne gave Henry Scott the special title of Earl of Deloraine. This made him a very important person in Scotland. That same year, he was chosen to be a member of the last Scottish Parliament. He voted to support the Acts of Union, which joined Scotland and England to form Great Britain.

In 1725, he received another honor, becoming a Knight of the Order of the Bath. This is a special award given for great service. In 1727, he was chosen to be a Gentleman of the Bedchamber. This was a trusted position in the royal household.

Later Life and Family

In 1726, Lord Deloraine married for a second time. His new wife was Mary Howard. She was the granddaughter of Colonel Philip Howard. Henry and Mary had two daughters:

Lord Deloraine passed away suddenly on Christmas Day in 1730. He died in a place called Leadwell (now Ledwell) in Oxfordshire. He was buried at Sandford St Martin, which is also in Oxfordshire. His second wife, Mary, later remarried and was buried in Windsor.
