The Taylor-Grady House is a cool old building in Athens, Georgia. It's also called the Henry W. Grady House. This house was built in the 1840s and looks like a Greek Revival style building. It's special because it was once the home of Henry W. Grady (1850–1889). He was an important newspaper editor for the Atlanta Constitution. Henry W. Grady helped bring the American South back together after the American Civil War. Today, the Junior League of Athens takes care of the house. You can visit it for tours or even rent it for special parties.

What is the Taylor-Grady House Like?

The Taylor-Grady House is in the middle of Athens. It sits on a big, pretty piece of land. The house is a two-story building made of wood. It has a special roof that looks hidden by a decorative border. This border goes around three sides of the house.

Unique Features of the House

The roof extends out on three sides, creating a covered porch area. This porch is held up by thirteen large, round columns. These columns are in the Doric order, which is a classic Greek style. Inside, the house has a main hallway down the middle. Many of the original details are still there. This includes the wooden trim, plaster designs, and fireplace decorations.

Who Lived in the Taylor-Grady House?

The house was built in the mid-1840s for General Robert Taylor. He was an immigrant from Ireland. General Taylor owned a large farm and was a leader in the state's army.

Henry W. Grady's Connection

In 1863, William S. Grady bought the house. He lived there with his family until 1872. William's son, Henry, was a child at the time. He had many good memories of growing up in this house.

Henry W. Grady became very famous later in life. He was the managing editor of the Atlanta Constitution newspaper. Under his leadership, it became a very important newspaper in the region. In 1886, he gave a famous speech. He talked about how the northern and southern states should work together. He also encouraged businesses from the North to invest in the South. Henry Grady is known for popularizing the idea of a "New South." This idea was about the South moving forward and becoming more industrial.

The House Today

The City of Athens bought the house in 1966. In 1976, it was named a National Historic Landmark. This means it's a very important historical place in the United States. The Junior League of Athens now manages the house. They offer tours and rent it out for events.
