About the Taylor-Grady House
The Taylor-Grady House is in the middle of Athens, Georgia. It sits on a large, pretty piece of land. The house is a two-story building made of wood. It has a special roof that looks like a flat border around the top.
This roof sticks out on three sides, creating a porch area. This porch is held up by thirteen large, round columns. Inside, the house has a main hallway in the center. Many of the original parts, like the wooden details and fireplaces, are still there.
History of the House
The house was built in the mid-1840s for General Robert Taylor. He was an Irish immigrant who owned a large farm. He was also a leader in the state's military.
In 1863, William S. Grady bought the house. He lived there with his family until 1872. His son, Henry W. Grady, was a child at the time. He always remembered this house fondly.
Henry W. Grady's Legacy
Henry W. Grady became very well-known across the country. He was the managing editor of the Atlanta Constitution newspaper. Under his leadership, it became a major newspaper in the South.
In 1886, he gave a famous speech. He asked people in the North and South to work together. He also encouraged businesses from the North to invest in the South. Grady is known for popularizing the phrase "New South". This idea was about the South moving forward and becoming more modern.
