Henry XIV, Duke of Bavaria facts for kids
Henry XIV, Duke of Bavaria, was an important ruler in medieval Germany. He was born in 1305 and became a duke of Lower Bavaria. He played a role in the politics of his time, supporting the Holy Roman Emperor Louis IV. Henry XIV died in 1339.
His Family
Henry was born in Landshut, a city in Germany. His father was Stephen I, Duke of Bavaria. His mother was Jutta of Schweidnitz.
Becoming a Duke
After his father passed away, Henry became the Duke of Lower Bavaria. He ruled alongside his brother, Otto IV. They were guided by Louis IV, Holy Roman Emperor. Henry supported Emperor Louis IV in his conflicts against Frederick I.
In 1333, Emperor Louis IV thought about stepping down from his position. At that time, Henry XIV was considered a possible candidate to become the next German king.
Important Events
Henry XIV had some disagreements with his brother Otto IV, who died in 1334. He also had conflicts with his cousin, Henry XV, Duke of Bavaria. These arguments were about how to divide their lands. These issues made his relationship with Emperor Louis IV difficult for a while.
Later, Henry XIV became allies with his father-in-law, John I of Bohemia. In the winter of 1337, Henry joined John on a crusade in Prussia. They went with many followers.
Henry XIV and Emperor Louis IV became friends again in February 1339. A few months later, Henry died from leprosy. His son, John I, Duke of Bavaria, became the new duke after him.
His Marriage and Children
On August 12, 1328, Henry married Margaret of Bohemia. She was the daughter of John I of Bohemia and Elisabeth of Bohemia (1292–1330).
Henry and Margaret had two children:
- John I, Duke of Bavaria (born November 29, 1329 – died December 20, 1340)
- Henry of Wittelsbach (born 1330). He passed away in the same year he was born.
