John I of Bavaria (born November 29, 1329 – died December 20, 1340) was a young duke who ruled Lower Bavaria for a short time. He became the Duke of Lower Bavaria in 1339.
Who Was John I?
John I was born on November 29, 1329. He was the son of Henry XIV, Duke of Bavaria, who was also a Duke of Lower Bavaria. His mother was Margaret of Bohemia.
His Family
John's family was very important in Europe. His mother's parents, his grandparents, were John I of Bohemia and Elisabeth of Bohemia. This meant he had connections to the powerful rulers of Bohemia.
A Short Reign
When John I was still a child, he married Anna of Bavaria. She was born in 1326 and lived until 1361. Anna was the daughter of Louis IV of Bavaria, a very powerful ruler.
John I became the Duke of Lower Bavaria in 1339. However, his rule was very short. He was still a minor, meaning he was too young to rule on his own. He was the last duke of Lower Bavaria from his family line.
Sadly, John I died young in 1340, when he was only 11 years old. After his death, the duchy of Lower Bavaria was taken over by Louis IV. Louis IV then brought all of Bavaria back together in January 1341. John's mother, Margaret of Bohemia, had to return to her home country of Bohemia after her son's death.
