Henry de Beaumont, also known as Henry de Newburgh, was an important English noble. He was the 5th Earl of Warwick. He was born around 1192 and died on October 10, 1229. His parents were Waleran de Beaumont, the 4th Earl of Warwick, and Margaret de Bohun. Through his marriages, he also became Lord of Hocknorton (Hook Norton) and Hedenton (Headington) in Oxfordshire.
Henry's Early Life and Land Disputes
When Henry was about 12 years old, in 1204, his father passed away. Henry was then placed under the care of Thomas Basset of Headington. Thomas Basset's family were powerful lords in the area.
Around this time, King John took away some of Henry's family lands. These lands were in a place called the Gower Peninsula in South Wales. King John gave these lands to another powerful person, William de Braose. This caused many arguments and fights between the Earls of Warwick and the Braose family for years to come.
Henry's Role in Wars
Henry de Beaumont had to pay money to the king for wars. In 1213, he paid a large sum called "scutage" to help pay for a war in Wales. The next year, he paid more money for a war in Poitou, France.
However, Henry soon decided to join the king's side. He became a commander in the Royal Army for King John. Later, he fought for King Henry III. He helped in important battles and sieges. These included the siege of Mountsorrel in 1217, and battles at Bytham and Lincoln.
Henry's Family Life
Henry de Beaumont was married twice. His first marriage was to Margaret. She was the daughter of Henry D'Oyly, who was a Baron and Lord of the Manor of Lidney. Margaret was also a relative of Robert D'Oyly, who built Oxford Castle. Henry and Margaret had one daughter together:
After Margaret passed away, Henry married Philippa Basset. Philippa was the daughter of Thomas Basset, Lord of Headington. Henry and Philippa had two children:
- Thomas de Beaumont, 6th Earl of Warwick, who became the next Earl
- Alice de Newburgh, who married Hugo de Bastenbrege, Lord of Montfort
