Henry de Motlowe was an English judge who lived a long time ago. He was even a top judge in Ireland for a short time before he died in 1361.

Early Life and Family

Henry de Motlowe was born in a place called Cheshire, England. His family came from a village named Nether Alderley. His last name, Motlowe, might even be linked to another village nearby, Mobberley. This village was called Motburlege in the old Domesday Book.

Henry also owned land in a place called Church Lawton. In 1338, someone named Ralph de Lawton officially gave up any claim he had to Henry's land there. This meant Henry and his family had full ownership.

Working for the King

By 1346, Henry was already an important official working for the King of England. He was part of a special group in London that looked into fake versions of the King's official seal. The King's seal was used to make documents official, so faking it was a very serious crime.

In that same year, Henry was chosen to be the Lord Chief Justice of Ireland. This was a very important job, like being the main judge in Ireland. However, he only held this position for a few months. Another judge, John de Rednesse, took over his role later that year. Soon after, Henry was working on another special legal group in Derbyshire, England.

Later Career as a Judge

In 1357, Henry de Motlowe became a judge in the Court of Common Pleas. This was an important court in England that handled many legal cases.

In the same year, he joined another special group set up by the King. This group had to investigate a fight that happened. The fight was between Simon Warde, who worked for John Gynwell, the Bishop of Lincoln, and some members of the Hospitallers. Simon Warde was trying to give them official papers for a lawsuit.

Interestingly, the future leader of the Hospitallers, Richard de Wirkeley, was involved in this fight. He had also been a Lord Chief Justice of Ireland, just like Henry de Motlowe. Another judge on this special group was William de Notton, who had also been a Chief Justice in Ireland.
