The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts is a special part of Arizona State University (ASU) in Tempe, Arizona. It was created in 2009 when two older schools joined together. These were the Katherine K. Herberger College of the Arts and the College of Design.
This institute is a place where students can learn about many creative subjects. It has five main schools and also a museum. Students can study art, design, music, dance, theatre, and film here.
What You Can Study Here
The Herberger Institute has several different schools and a museum. Each one focuses on a different area of creativity:
- School of Art: Where you can learn to create visual art.
- School of Arts, Media and Engineering: This school combines art with technology.
- The Design School: Here, students learn about different types of design.
- The Sidney Poitier New American Film School: This school teaches about making movies, dance, and theatre. It was renamed in 2020.
- School of Music, Dance and Theatre: A place to study performing arts.
- ASU Art Museum: This museum shows amazing art.
Leaders of the Institute
Many people have helped lead the Herberger Institute and its earlier schools. These leaders, called deans, guide the programs and help students succeed. The current dean, who started in 2014, is Steven J. Tepper.
Special Awards
The Herberger Institute has received important awards. In 2017, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) gave the institute $100,000. The NEA is a U.S. government group that supports art and culture. This award helped the institute work with the Center for Performance and Civic Practice.
