Herbert Mackworth Clogstoun was a brave soldier who received the Victoria Cross. This is the highest award for courage a soldier can get in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries. He was born on June 13, 1820, and passed away on May 6, 1862.

A Heroic Act: The Victoria Cross

Herbert Clogstoun earned his Victoria Cross for an amazing act of bravery. This happened during a conflict known as the Indian Mutiny on January 15, 1859. At the time, he was a 38-year-old Captain in the 19th Madras Native Infantry.

Charging into Danger

Captain Clogstoun showed incredible courage when he led a charge against rebels in a town called Chichumbah. He had only eight soldiers with him from the 2nd Cavalry Hyderabad Contingent. Even with such a small group, he managed to push the rebels back into the town.

Saving Plunder

Because of his brave charge, the rebels were forced to leave behind the things they had stolen. This act helped protect valuable items. Captain Clogstoun was badly hurt during this fight. Sadly, seven of the eight soldiers who went with him were also lost.

Later Life and Legacy

After his heroic deed, Herbert Clogstoun was promoted to the rank of major. He continued his service but was killed in action in Hingoli, India, on May 6, 1862.

Where to See His Medal
