Herbert II, Count of Maine facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Herbert II (died March 9, 1062) was an important leader known as the Count of Maine from 1051 until his death in 1062. He was part of a powerful family called the Hugonides. His father was Hugh IV of Maine, and his mother was Bertha of Blois.

When Herbert's father, Hugh IV, passed away, Geoffrey Martel, who was the Count of Anjou, took control of Maine. He forced Herbert's mother, Berthe de Blois, and Gervais de Château du Loir, the Bishop of Le Mans, to leave. They found safety at the court of Normandy.

Herbert's Escape and Alliance

In 1056, Herbert managed to escape from Le Mans. He then traveled to the court of William, the Duke of Normandy. This was a very important meeting for Herbert.

While at William's court, Herbert's sister, Marguerite, was planned to marry Robert Curthose, who was William's son. However, Marguerite sadly died before the marriage could happen.

Herbert showed his loyalty to Duke William by paying "homage" for the county of Maine. This meant he recognized William as his superior and promised to be loyal to him. In return, William would protect Herbert's lands. Herbert was also supposed to marry Adelida, one of William's daughters, but he died in 1062 before the wedding could take place.
