The Herkimer Home State Historic Site is a special place in Herkimer County, New York. It's a historic house that you can visit like a museum! This home is located in the northern part of the Town of Danube, right near the Mohawk River.
The house was built in 1764 by a brave man named Nicholas Herkimer. He was an important general during the American Revolutionary War. Sadly, he passed away in this very house in 1777 from injuries he got during the Battle of Oriskany. He is also buried right there on the property. Later, in 1834, the house was owned by Nicholas Herkimer's nephew, John Herkimer.
What Can You Do at Herkimer Home?
Herkimer Home is a great place to explore and learn about history! You can enjoy a picnic in the outdoor areas and see beautiful views of the surrounding land. There's a visitor center where you can learn more, and you can take tours of the historic house. Sometimes, they even have fun re-enactments that show what life was like long ago. You can also walk through the gardens and enjoy some hiking trails.
Why Was the Park Almost Closed?
In 2010, the governor of New York at the time, David Paterson, considered closing the park. This was because the state needed to save money. Many people did not want the park to close, and they worked hard to keep it open. Because of their efforts, Herkimer Home State Historic Site remained open for everyone to visit and enjoy.
