Herkimer Home State Historic Site is a special historic house museum located in Herkimer County, New York. You can find it in the northern part of the Town of Danube, just south of the Mohawk River. This site helps us learn about an important time in American history.
The house was built in 1764 by a brave man named Nicholas Herkimer. He was a general during the American Revolutionary War. Sadly, he passed away in this very house in 1777. His death was due to injuries he received during the Battle of Oriskany. General Herkimer is also buried right there at the site. Later, in 1834, his nephew, John Herkimer, owned the house.

However, many people did not want the park to close. There was strong opposition from the community and history lovers. Because so many people spoke up, the park remained open. This shows how important historic places like Herkimer Home are to people.
