Herm Winningham's Baseball Journey

Starting Out in the Major Leagues

Herm Winningham was chosen by the New York Mets in the first round of the 1981 Major League Baseball Draft. He made his first appearance in the major leagues with the Mets on September 1, 1984.

At one point, Herm was seen as a very promising young player for the Mets. He was part of a big trade that sent him to the Montreal Expos. This trade also involved other players like Gary Carter, Hubie Brooks, Floyd Youmans, and Mike Fitzgerald.

Even though he had great talent, Herm mostly played as a reserve outfielder during his career. This means he often came into games from the bench. His last game in the major leagues was with the Boston Red Sox on October 3, 1992.

Becoming a World Series Champion

One of the most exciting parts of Herm Winningham's career was when he played for the Cincinnati Reds. This team won the 1990 National League Championship Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Then, they went on to defeat the Oakland Athletics in the 1990 World Series.

In the final game of the World Series, Herm stepped up when his teammate, Billy Hatcher, got injured. Herm played really well, getting two hits out of three chances. He also scored the winning run for his team, helping them secure the championship! During the entire 1990 postseason, he had an impressive batting average of .364.

After His Playing Days

After his time as a professional baseball player, Herm Winningham became a baseball coach. He coached the baseball team at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School in his hometown of Orangeburg.
