Hermann Glauert facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hermann Glauert was a clever British scientist who studied how air moves around things, especially airplanes. This field is called aerodynamics. He was born on October 4, 1892, and sadly passed away on August 6, 1934. He was a top scientist at the Royal Aircraft Establishment in Farnborough, a place where they research aircraft.

Early Life and Learning

Hermann Glauert was born in Sheffield, a city in Yorkshire, England. His father, Louis Glauert, made cutlery. Hermann went to King Edward VII School in Sheffield. Later, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, which is a very famous university.

His Work with Airplanes

Hermann Glauert wrote many important papers about how airplane wings (aerofoils) and propellers work. His book, The Elements of Aerofoil and Airscrew Theory, was very important. It helped spread ideas about how wings and airfoils work to many people who spoke English.

Glauert also developed a special method called the Prandtl-Glauert method. This method helps scientists understand how air moves around planes at high speeds. He published his findings in a well-known science journal in 1928. In the 1930s, he also guided another important scientist named Gwen Alston.

His Family

Hermann Glauert married Muriel Barker, who was also an aerodynamicist at the Royal Aircraft Establishment. They had three children together. Their son was named Michael, and they had twins named Audrey and Richard.

Hermann Glauert is buried in Ship Lane Cemetery in Farnborough. His wife, Muriel, was later buried next to him after she passed away.

A Sad Accident

Hermann Glauert died at the age of 41. This happened in an accident in a park in Farnborough. His old school remembered him as a very distinguished person. They said he was an international expert in the science of airplanes.
