The Life and Art of Hermann
Hermann Huppen was born in 1938 in a place called Bévercé, which is now part of Malmedy in Belgium. Before he became a comic artist, he studied to be a furniture maker. He even worked as an interior architect for a while.
Starting His Comic Journey
Hermann began his career as a comic book artist in 1964. His first work was a four-page story published in the famous Franco-Belgian comics magazine Spirou. Another well-known comic creator, Greg, saw Hermann's talent. Greg invited him to work in his studio.
In 1966, Hermann started drawing the Bernard Prince series. Greg wrote the stories for this series. It was published in Tintin magazine. A few years later, in 1969, Hermann teamed up with Greg again. They created a western series called Comanche. This series came out around the same time as other popular western comics like Blueberry.
Creating His Own Stories
Hermann began writing his own comic stories in 1977. This is when he started the Jeremiah series. This series is set in a world after a major disaster. Hermann is still creating new stories for Jeremiah today.
Around the same time, he also made three comic albums for Spirou magazine. These were part of a series called Nick, inspired by the classic comic Little Nemo in Slumberland. In 1983, Hermann started a new series called Les Tours de Bois-Maury. This series takes place in the Middle Ages. It focuses more on adventure and less on action compared to his other works.
Other Works and Style
Hermann has also created many standalone graphic novels. These are often made with his son, Yves H. One of these graphic novels, Lune de Guerre, had a story written by Jean Van Hamme. This story was later made into a movie called The Wedding Party.
Hermann's art style is very realistic. His stories often have a serious and sometimes angry tone. They show a sense of disappointment with human nature and society.
