Deza County in Pontevedra Province-es
The O Deza region in Galicia governed by Count Hermenegildo González

Hermenegildo González (also known as Mendo I Gonçalves) was an important count who lived in the 900s. He was from Galicia, a region in what is now Spain and Portugal. He was a powerful leader in the Kingdom of León and managed a region called O Deza. Hermenegildo is known as the ancestor of a very important family line from that time. His name often appears in old documents as Ermegildus Gundisaluis.

About Hermenegildo

Hermenegildo was the son of Count Gonzalo Betótez and Teresa Eriz. His mother's father was also a count, named Ero Fernández. Hermenegildo had several brothers and sisters. One of his sisters, Aragonta González, was married to King Ordoño II of León for a time. His brother, Pelayo González, was also a count.

Hermenegildo started appearing in official records around the year 926. He seems to have passed away when he was still relatively young. He is not mentioned in any documents after 943, and by 950, his wife and children were already dividing up his property. His wife, however, continued to appear in records until 981.

Family Life

Hermenegildo married Mumadona Dias. She was a very important woman and was known as the Countess of Portugal around 915 to 920. Mumadona was the daughter of Count Diego Fernández and Countess Onecca. She is also famous for founding the Monastery of Guimarães.

In 926, King Ramiro II of León gave Hermenegildo and Mumadona a village called Creximir, which was near Guimarães. Two years later, Mumadona's mother, Onecca, made a gift to the Monastery of Lorvão. Many important people confirmed this gift, including her son-in-law Hermenegildo. In that document, she mentioned all her children.

Hermenegildo and Mumadona had several children:

  • Gonzalo Menéndez: He became a count and a powerful leader in Portugal. The first document mentioning him is from July 24, 950, which also confirms that Hermenegildo had already died by then.
  • Diego Menéndez: He passed away after 964. He was married to a woman named Aldonza. They had a daughter, also named Mumadona Dias, who became a nun at the monastery her grandmother founded.
  • Ramiro Menéndez: He passed away before 964. He was married to Adosinda Gutiérrez. They were likely the parents of Queen Velasquita Ramírez, who was the first wife of King Bermudo II of León.
  • Onecca Menéndez: She married Gutierre Rodríguez.
  • Nuño Menéndez: He passed away around 959.
  • Arias Menéndez
