Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ero Fernández (died around 926) was an important leader from Galicia, a region in what is now Spain. He was a count in Lugo and was the grandfather of a famous saint, St. Rudesind. Ero Fernández's family was very influential. They married into the most important noble families in the kingdoms of León and Castile.

A Powerful Count

We don't have many records about Ero Fernández's parents. We know his father was named Fernando because of his last name. Some historians believe he might have been the brother of another powerful count, Diego Fernández.

Count Ero lived during the time of King Alfonso III and the kings who came after him. He held the title of count from the late 800s into the early 900s. We know he was part of King Alfonso's royal court. This is confirmed by a document from September 30, 899. In this document, the king gave several villages in Coimbra to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

Ero Fernández was the main leader in Lugo. On July 7, 910, he confirmed a document for King Ordoño II. In this document, he and other counts promised to rebuild homes destroyed in the city. A year later, on April 22, 911, he witnessed another document from King Ordoño. This document confirmed gifts made by earlier kings to the Cathedral of Santiago.

Count Ero was a great supporter of monasteries. With his second wife, Elvira, he founded the Monastery of Ferreira de Pallares. He later retired there while Elvira was still alive. He is last mentioned in a document from September 24, 926. This document confirmed a gift given by Gunterico Arias to Ero's granddaughter, Gontrodo González. Ero Fernández likely died soon after this date. He was probably buried at the Monastery of Ferreira de Pallares, which he had founded.

Family Life

Ero Fernández was married two times.

From his first marriage to Adosinda of Monterroso (who died before 898), he had two children:

Around 898, Ero Fernández married again. His second wife was Countess Elvira. That same year, Elvira made a large gift to the Monastery of Ferreira de Pallares, which they had founded together. The children from this marriage were:

  • Diego Ériz: In 917, his mother Elvira made a gift for his soul. It is thought that he was the father of Nepociano and Gundesinda Díaz. However, there isn't strong proof for this.
  • Godesteo Ériz: (died in 939). He was married to Gugina, and they had five children. After Godesteo died, Gugina made a gift for his soul. She mentioned Count Ero and Elvira as her parents. Because of this, some historians believed she was their daughter. However, other documents suggest she was actually their daughter-in-law.

Ero Fernández also had two other daughters. It is not certain which marriage they came from:

  • Teresa Ériz: She was the wife of Gonzalo Betótez, a count in Deza. They were the parents of Queen Aragonta, who was briefly married to King Ordoño II. They also had Count Pelayo González of Deza and Count Hermenegildo González. They were also ancestors of queens Elvira Menéndez and, most likely, Velasquita Ramírez.
  • Goto Ériz: She was the wife of a man named Munio. They might have been the parents of Ero Muñoz.
