Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hermon, Penrhiwceiber was a special kind of church called a Calvinistic Methodist chapel. It was located on Railway Terrace in Penrhiwceiber, a town in Glamorgan, Wales. At Hermon, all the services were held in the Welsh language.

Early Days of Hermon Chapel

Hermon Chapel was one of the biggest chapels in the Aberdare Valley. It had enough seats for about 800 people! The first stone for the chapel was placed on December 10, 1894. It cost £4,000 to build, which was a lot of money back then. By 1896, only two years after it started, 326 people had joined as members.

The first leader, called a minister, was T.J. Edwards. Later, Rowland Morgan became the minister in 1900.

Hermon in the 20th Century

Over time, the number of members at Hermon Chapel started to change. By 1931, there were 186 members.

In the 1960s, D. Ben Rees was the minister. He later became a minister in Liverpool for more than 40 years. While he was in the Aberdare Valley, he studied the history of chapels there. He even wrote a book about it called Chapels in the Valley, which came out in 1975.

However, during this time and after, fewer and fewer people attended the chapel. Sadly, Hermon Chapel closed its doors in 1980. It was then taken down in 1995.
