Hernandez is a small community in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Hernandez is located about 5 miles (8 km) northwest of Española along highways US 84 and US 285.

Hernandez in Art and Culture
Hernandez became very famous because of a black and white photograph called Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico. This picture was taken by the famous photographer Ansel Adams on November 1, 1941. He took it from the side of highway US 84 / US 285.
The photograph became incredibly valuable over time. In 1971, a print of this image sold for $71,500, which was a huge amount for a photograph back then. That same print sold again in 2006 for $609,600! This shows how important and admired Ansel Adams's work, especially this photo of Hernandez, became in the art world.
Another famous artist, Georgia O'Keeffe, also visited Hernandez in 1931. She painted a picture called Another Church, Hernandez, New Mexico. Her painting shows the front and part of the inside of an old adobe church in the community.
