What Was the Herndon Building?
The Herndon Building was started in 1924 and finished in 1925. It was a three-story building made of brick. You could easily spot it because it had a large "H" on the front.
This building was used for many different businesses. It had offices for doctors and even a pharmacy. It was a place where many people worked and served the community.
Why Was the Building Important?
The Herndon Building was special because it was linked to the life of Alonzo Herndon. He was a very successful African American businessman. The building was one of three important places in the historic district connected to him. The other two were the Atlanta Life Insurance Company Building and the Rucker Building.
The Building's End
Sadly, the Herndon Building became empty and started to fall apart. It was already being considered for demolition. Then, in April 2008, a big tornado hit Atlanta. The tornado caused serious damage to the building.
Because of the damage, the Herndon Building had to be torn down. This happened in late April 2008. The tornado also passed very close to the Herndon Home, which was about one mile west of the building.
What's There Now?
Today, the land where the Herndon Building once stood is empty. The Butler Street YMCA owns the property. The YMCA is located very close by. So far, the YMCA has not shared any plans for what they will do with the empty site.
