Hertha Emma Flack (born Hertha Eisenmenger) was an amazing American woman. She lived from 1916 to 2019. Hertha was known for helping others, painting beautiful pictures, and encouraging people to go hiking. She left a lasting impact through her art and her efforts to support communities.

Her Early Life
Hertha Emma Eisenmenger was born in Cleveland, Ohio. This was on October 10, 1916. Her parents were Hugo Emil Eisenmenger and Charlotte Sonya Escherich. They were born in Austria and moved to the United States. Her father was an electrical engineer. Her grandfather, August Eisenmenger, was a famous Austrian painter.
Hertha finished high school at A. B. Davis High School in Mount Vernon, New York. She then went to Swarthmore College. In 1938, she earned a degree in zoology. Later, in 1941, she got a master's degree in nursing from Yale School of Nursing. Hertha also loved art. She studied painting at the Bronx Botanical Garden and with artist Zoltán Szabó.
Her Amazing Work
Hertha Flack was very active in many ways. She loved to hike and even wrote a book about it.
Hiking the Appalachian Trail
In 1981, Hertha and her first husband, James Flack, wrote a book together. It was called Ambling and Scrambling on the Appalachian Trail. The book was about their eight-year adventure. They hiked the entire Appalachian Trail after they retired. They also traveled around, giving talks and showing slides about their hiking trips. They even did radio interviews to promote their book.
Helping Communities
Hertha and James Flack also helped many organizations. In 1985, they created two awards at Swarthmore College. These were the Flack Achievement Award and the Flack Faculty Award for Teaching. They also started the Foothills Equestrian Nature Center (FENCE). This center helps people enjoy nature and horses. They also founded the Polk County Community Foundation in North Carolina. This foundation supports local projects.
Her Art
Hertha Flack was also a talented painter. She created beautiful landscapes and botanical watercolors. Her paintings were shown mainly in North Carolina. She was a member of the Tryon Painters and Sculptors group. She continued to show her art in local shows even when she was in her nineties.
Her Family Life
Hertha Eisenmenger married James Monroe Flack in 1941. He was a naval officer. After World War II, they lived in Massachusetts and North Carolina. They had two sons and two daughters. James Flack passed away in 1989 while they were traveling.
In 1993, Hertha married again to Wray Stockton Monroe. He was a retired dentist. She became a widow again when Wray passed away in 2001. Hertha Flack lived a long and full life. She died in 2019, at the age of 102, in Tryon, North Carolina.
