Hervé Auguste Étienne Albans Faye ((1814-10-01)1 October 1814 – (1902-07-04)4 July 1902) was a famous French astronomer. He was born in a town called Saint-Benoît-du-Sault, France. He studied at a well-known school, the École Polytechnique. He became very interested in space and stars during his time there. He even left school early to work at the Paris Observatory.

Discovering Comets

Hervé Faye spent a lot of time studying comets. These are icy space objects that orbit the Sun. On November 22, 1843, he made an exciting discovery. He found a new periodic comet, which was later named 4P/Faye (Faye's Comet) after him.

Faye's Comet and Awards

The discovery of Faye's Comet made him famous around the world. Because of this important find, he won the Lalande Prize in 1844. He also became a member of the French Academy of Sciences, which is a very respected group of scientists in France.

Teaching and Leadership

After his discovery, Faye continued his work in science. In 1848, he became a teacher of geodesy at the École Polytechnique. Geodesy is the science of measuring and understanding Earth's shape and gravity. Later, in 1854, he became the head of an academy in Nancy and a professor of astronomy. He held many important positions throughout his life.

Public Service

Hervé Faye also served as the Minister of Public Instruction for a short time in 1877. This role involved overseeing education in France. He was also the president of the Société Astronomique de France (SAF), which is the main French astronomy society, from 1889 to 1891. From 1892 to 1902, he led the International Geodetic Association.

Faye's Astronomical Studies

Hervé Faye's work covered many areas of astronomy. He figured out how long it took for comets to orbit the Sun. He also measured parallaxes, which help astronomers find the distance to stars. He studied how stars and planets move.

Studying the Sun

Faye was also very interested in the sun. He developed new ideas about what comets, meteors, and the aurora borealis (the northern and southern lights) are made of. He also had original theories about the sun's nature and shape.

Faye's Beliefs

Hervé Faye wrote a book called Sur l'origine du Monde (On the Origin of the World). In this book, he shared his thoughts on the universe. He believed that a "Superior Intelligence" created everything. He quoted a line from the Bible, "The heavens declare the glory of God." This showed his belief that the beauty of space points to a creator.
