Hervé Renard is a famous French football coach. He was also a football player. He is known for leading different national teams to big wins. He is currently the head coach of the Saudi Arabia men's team.
Renard has won the Africa Cup of Nations twice. He won it with Zambia in 2012. Then he won it again in 2015 with the Ivory Coast. This made him the first coach to win the tournament with two different teams. He also coached Morocco at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. From 2019 to 2023, he managed Saudi Arabia. After that, he coached the France women's team for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. In October 2024, he returned to coach Saudi Arabia for a second time.

Early Life and Playing Career
Hervé Renard was born on September 30, 1968, in Aix-les-Bains, France. He played football as a defender. His playing career lasted from 1983 to 1998. He played for French clubs like Cannes and Draguignan. After he stopped playing professionally, he even started his own cleaning company.
Coaching Journey
Starting Out as a Coach
Renard began his coaching career with Draguignan. He worked as an assistant coach in China. He also managed English club Cambridge United in 2004. Later, he coached Vietnamese club Nam Dinh and French club Cherbourg. He also helped coach the Ghana team.
Success with Zambia
In May 2008, Renard became the manager of the Zambia national team. He led Zambia to the quarter-finals of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations. This was their best result in 14 years. He left Zambia in April 2010.
He then coached Angola for a few months. After that, he managed Algerian club USM Alger in 2011.
Renard returned to coach Zambia in October 2011. He led the team to their first-ever victory in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012. This win was very special. It was dedicated to 18 players who died in a plane crash in 1993. The crash happened near where the 2012 final was played. Renard left Zambia again in October 2013.
Coaching in France and Ivory Coast
After Zambia, Renard became the manager of French club Sochaux in October 2013. The team was relegated, and he left in May 2014.

In July 2014, Renard was appointed manager of the Ivory Coast. He led them to win the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. This made him the first coach to win the tournament with two different countries.
In May 2015, Renard became the manager of French club Lille. However, he was sacked in November 2015 after a difficult start to the season.
Morocco and Saudi Arabia
In February 2016, Renard was appointed as the new manager of the Morocco national team. In November 2017, he helped Morocco qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. This was their first World Cup appearance since 1998. Morocco was eliminated from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in July 2019. Renard took responsibility for this and resigned a few days later.
In July 2019, he became the manager of Saudi Arabia. He was the first Frenchman to coach their team. In March 2022, Renard led Saudi Arabia to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. At the World Cup, his team achieved a huge upset. They beat Argentina 2–1, who were one of the favorites to win the tournament. However, Saudi Arabia lost their other two matches and were eliminated. He left Saudi Arabia in March 2023.
Coaching France Women's Team
In March 2023, Renard became the manager of the France women's national football team. He was tasked with preparing the team for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. He became the first coach to manage teams in two different senior World Cups in the same year. He is also the second manager to coach at both the men's and women's World Cups.
On July 29, 2023, he made history again. He became the first coach to win a match in both the men's and women's World Cups. This happened when France defeated Brazil in the group stage. France was later eliminated in the quarter-finals by Australia. Renard left his role after the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Return to Saudi Arabia
On October 26, 2024, Hervé Renard was reappointed as the head coach of Saudi Arabia. This was his second time coaching the team.
Personal Life
Hervé Renard is in a relationship with Viviane Dièye. She is the widow of another football coach, Bruno Metsu. Renard's grandparents on his mother's side were from Poland.
