Hervey de Keith's Life
Hervey de Keith got his name from a place called the Barony of Keith. This land was in an area of Scotland called East Lothian. He owned the northern part of this land. The southern part belonged to another nobleman, Simon Fraser.
Their lands were known as Keith Harvey and Keith Symmars.
Building a New Church
Around the year 1160, Simon Fraser gave the church on his land to the monks of Kelso Abbey. This meant Hervey de Keith had to build a brand new church on his own land, in Keith Harvey. He also had to pay money to Kelso Abbey every year.
Later, Hervey de Keith had some disagreements with Kelso Abbey. They argued about how much money he should pay them each year. These problems were solved with the help of important church leaders. These leaders were Jocelin, who was the Bishop of Glasgow, and Osbert, the Prior of Paisley.
They decided that Hervey de Keith had to pay twenty shillings to the Abbey every year. In the official document about this decision, he was called "Marescallus Regis Scocie". This Latin phrase means "Marischal of the King of Scotland."
