Hervé Fischer (born in 1941) is a French artist, thinker, and sociologist. He studied at a famous school in Paris called the École Normale Supérieure. He also taught about communication and culture at the Sorbonne university.

Hervé Fischer is known for creating "sociological art" in 1971. This type of art often involves the public. He started many projects using radio, TV, and newspapers. These projects took place in Europe and Latin America before he moved to Quebec, Canada. He can speak French, English, German, and Spanish very well.

Hervé Fischer's Life and Work

Hervé Fischer was born in France in 1941. He is both a French and Canadian philosopher and artist. He earned a Master's degree in philosophy. He also received a PhD in sociology.

He taught sociology of communication and culture at the Sorbonne. As a multi-media artist, he created "sociological art." This art often involved people joining in. He led many public projects using different media. These included radio, television, and print. He worked in many European and Latin American countries. Later, he moved to Quebec.

Hervé Fischer was a special guest at major art events. These included the Venice Biennial in 1976. He also attended the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1981. In 1982, he was at Documenta 7 in Germany. He had his own art shows. These were at the Musée Galliéra in 1976. He also had a big show at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Montreal in 1980. Another show was in Mexico in 1983.

In 1985, he helped organize a special project. It was called the Marco Polo electronic novel. Writers from Africa, Europe, and Canada took part. Famous writers Umberto Eco and Italo Calvino supported it.

Since 1999, he has been painting again. He focuses on digital art. He has had solo shows in many places. These include the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Argentina (2003). He also showed art in Uruguay (2004) and Chile (2006). Other shows were in Cuba (2009) and France (2010–11). He also exhibited at the Museu de Arte Moderna in Brazil (1976 and 2012).

The Centre Pompidou in Paris had a special show. It was called Hervé Fischer et l'art sociologique. This show looked back at his work. It ran from June to September 2017.

Hervé Fischer helped start several organizations. These include La Cité des arts et des nouvelles technologies in Montreal. He also co-founded the Quebec International Science Film Festival. Other groups he helped create are the Multimedia International Market and Science Pour Tous. Since 1997, he has been the co-founder and president of the International Federation of Multimedia Associations. He is also a member of the Canadian Committee of UNESCO.

From 2000 to 2002, he held a special position. It was the Daniel Langlois chair. This was for Fine Arts and Digital Technologies. It was at Concordia University in Montreal. There, he helped create a media lab. This lab became the Hexagram group. It connects Concordia and UQAM Universities. Since 2006, he has been an associate professor. He is also the director and founder of the International Digital Observatory at UQÀM.

In 1987, he helped create a computer-animated film. It was called "Le Chant des Étoiles." This 12-minute film won a top prize. It was in an international computer animation contest. This happened in the USA in 1988. He also received the first Leonardo (MIT Press) Makepeace Tsao Award. This was from a group for arts, science, and technology.

In 2011, he started something new. He called it tweet art and tweet philosophy. He made small digital pictures. He shared them on Twitter. These pictures had a philosophical message or question.

Hervé Fischer is on the board of Artists for Peace. He has received an honorary doctorate. This was from Quebec Universities. He gives important talks around the world. These talks are about digital technologies, art, and understanding myths.
