Hettie Belle Ege was born in Erie, Illinois, on March 31, 1861. Her parents were Joseph Arthur Ege and Catherine Rebecca Reisch Ege. Sadly, her father passed away in the same year she was born. Her mother remarried in 1869.
Hettie went to Western College in Oxford, Ohio, and graduated in 1886. Later, she continued her studies and graduated from Mills College in 1903. She also studied at other big universities, like the University of Chicago and the University of California. She even studied in Germany at the University of Munich.
Her Amazing Career
When she was younger, Hettie Ege taught school in Ohio and Colorado. In 1895, she started working at Mills College. She became a professor of mathematics and also the Dean of Women. This meant she was in charge of the female students. She even coached the Mills College basketball team!
From 1914 to 1916, Hettie Ege became the acting president of Mills College. A magazine in California once said that she was a very important person in education. This was because Mills College was as important to California as Wellesley College was to the East Coast.
In 1918, during World War I, Hettie helped lead a group of 28 Mills students. They joined the Woman's Land Army of America. This group helped on farms during the war when there weren't enough workers.
In 1920, Mills College celebrated Hettie's 25 years of working there. It was a big event with a special presentation. In 1925, she received an honorary doctorate degree. This was a special award given during the school's founder's 100th birthday celebration.
Hettie retired in 1930. After that, she spent some time in Cambridge, England. She often came back to Mills College for events and gatherings with former students. In 1933, she was honored as the college's dean emerita. This means she was still respected as a former dean. She was honored alongside the college president, Aurelia Henry Reinhardt, and a doctor named Mariana Bertola.

Hettie Belle Ege passed away on November 19, 1942, when she was 81 years old. She died in Oakland, California. Her grave is located right on the campus of Mills College. There is even a dormitory (a building where students live) named Ege Hall at Mills College, honoring her memory.
